HOKUSAI exhibition - journey to the foot of mont Fuji

From 1 October 2022 to 29 January 2023

For the first time, the famous Great Wave by Hokusai, the 18th-century Japanese artist, painter, draughtsman and engraver, will go on exhibi in Nice, among 126 prints, at the Musée départemental des Arts Asiatiques for 4 months.

EXHIBITION PROGRAMME

Is there anyone who doesn’t know Hokusai and his Great Wave?

It’s the most famous wave in the world. It has inspired many artists including Van Gogh, Monet, Debussy and Renoir.

At least once in their life, everyone has seen the famous work of the ‘Old Man Mad about Art’ in one form or another.

The symbol of Japan par excellence, The Great Wave off Kanagawa forged a link between Asia and the West.

The work thus creates a connection that is central to the goal of the Departmental Museum of Asian Arts whose role is to share the Asian art with visitors by integrating it into the history of humanity as a whole.

You will be able to dive into this unique exhibition thanks to the many activities on offer: guided tours, workshops, talks or even concerts and shows for the whole family to enjoy.

126 PRINTS BY KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI

Across one hundred and twenty-six prints by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) from the exceptional collection of Georges Leskowicz, the exhibition focuses on a well-known part of the master’s work.

The landscape, omnipresent in Japanese prints, takes on a new dimension in his work: Hokusai reinvented artistic conventions right from the start of his career, he then went on to revolutionise the genre in his series of the 1830s, to which the very famous Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and the Waterfalls and the Bridges belong.

His Manga and ten other works complete this selection, inviting the visitor to discover the sublime landscapes of Japan during the Edo period.

Admission is free.

Guided tours will be organised at the full rate of 5 euros and 2.5 euros for the reduced price.

Family visits will also be available for children aged 7 and over.

ABOUT THE MUSEE départemental DES ARTS ASIATIQUES

The Department of Alpes Maritimes commissioned the famous Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, to design a museum building as a meeting place for discussions on Asian art and western culture.

Located on the artificial lake in Phoenix Park, in a white marble and glass building designed by the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, the Musée départemental des Arts Asiatiques evokes the spirit of the main civilizations of Asia, India, South-East Asia, China and Japan through classical and contemporary works.

Temporary Exhibitions, as well as various shows and events, especially the famous Tea Ceremony highlight the museum’s creativity.
