FORMER CAPITAL OF PERFUME FLOWERS

With a rich horticultural past, La Colle-sur-Loup was, until the middle of the 20th century, the main producer of perfume flowers for the famous perfumeries in the Grasse region. Its history made it the capital of the Centifolia or cabbage rose, the main component in Chanel No. 5. The Espace Rose de Mai in Rue Clemenceau, now a multipurpose village hall, was the former perfume flower producers’ Cooperative. Open between 1907 and 1995, it originally grouped together landowners from La Colle, Saint-Paul and Villeneuve-Loubet and was created to collect and distil flowers. In La Colle, the famous centifolia rose was grown, but it was not alone: tea roses, orange flowers and also two different types of violet and even peppermint. Since 2007, La Colle-sur-Loup celebrates the rose every year in the middle of May. The first editions go back to the 1950s and aimed to entice the press and the stars staying on La Croisette during the Cannes Film Festival!
