rue Cotta, 06430 Tende
You cannot miss this splendid building, with its colourful Baroque ornaments, built between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century. Its Renaissance portal carved in green stone of the Roya overlooks the visitor with its twelve apostles.
Situated in the heart of old Tende, the collegiate church is administered by canons whose lodgings were located in the immediate vicinity. The building was built on the initiative of the Count of Tende Honoré Lascaris known as "Le grand". It was completed in 1562 and signed by sculptors from the Genoa region who created their masterpiece here. It is also an example of patronage unique in the region, as it was mainly thanks to the financing of Count Honoré, represented by one of the devotees kneeling before the Assumption, that the church was built. It is an imposing Lombard-style building with arches under the roof and an impressive elevation towards the ribbed vaults inside. The organ was restored in 1807 by the Lombard organ builders the Serrassi, whose instrumental aesthetics were to become the standard throughout Italy. The organ case is original, dating from 1673. Altars and altarpieces show the wealth of the noble and bourgeois families of the Baroque period. Gilding, bright colours, movements and contrasts are visible everywhere. The catacombs, whose access is closed today, house the tombs of the noble Lascaris and part of the family of the Counts of Savoy.
