This religious complex stands as one of the most remarkable Romanesque-style historical sites in Provence. Its purity and simplicity reflect a pursuit of serenity, silence, and “the quest for the absolute.” Listed as a Historic Monument.
Founded in 1199 by the Order of Chalais near the Brague River, this abbey—listed as a Historic Monument—preserves remarkable remains: a Romanesque altar and portal, as well as 18th‑century reliquary busts. Despite its brief existence, marked by poverty and disorder, it was given to Lérins Abbey in 1303, though the monks did not truly take possession until 1346. Now municipally owned and placed under the patronage of Saint Blaise, Sainte‑Marie‑de‑Valbonne remains a valuable testament to the region’s monastic history. It is currently undergoing restoration.
