At the time of the French Revolution, the medieval fortress that stood on the oppidum became national property and was acquired by the town to be transformed into a cemetery.
The castle of Jean II Grimaldi crowned the town for many years. In 1806, the site became a necropolis. Burials of foreign communities stand side by side with those of local families, testimony to Menton's rich past.
