This stele honors the birthplace of Jean-Baptiste Cotta, who was born and died in Tende (1668-1738) and gave his name to this street. A member of the Augustinian order, Cotta was a major author of Italian sacred poetry.
He was admitted to Italy's most illustrious academies; Genoa, Siena, Viterbo, Rome and Naples admired his eloquence and proclaimed him a famous orator. He taught sacred poetry at the universities of Florence.
In 1712, he had a collection of poems printed in Nice, written with great fire, purity and style, and never wanted to leave his homeland, despite the brilliant offers of Victor-Amédée, who had agreed to the dedication of his works.
