The jewel of the Maltese armada at the time of the corsair century (1580-1680), the galleys were floating penal colonies so excessively expensive, unsuitable for long voyages, high seas and rough weather, that they actually represented a tiny part of the fleet of the Knights of Malta. And yet, despite their numerous redoubts, it was on them that the Knights of Malta founded their lasting reputation as corsairs in the Mediterranean.
