The town of Fréjus was founded at the beginning of the Augustan period, at the crossroads of the Aurelian Way and coastal rivers which allowed regional production to be drained and distributed, via the port which sheltered the Roman fleet.
To the north and east of the city lie significant clay deposits, easy to access and work, which were exploited from the beginning of our era at the latest. They enabled the mass production of amphorae between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, intended for the transport and trade of local wine production. Local workshops also produced common limestone ceramics to supply a vast regional market, spanning the present-day departments of Var and Alpes-Maritimes and even reaching as far east as...
