The Lo Recampum Association is a third-party place that develops crafts based on the local materials of wood, stone and wool. The transmission of ancient know-how and respect for nature are at the heart of the association's activities.
The Lo Recampum Association was founded in 2001 by a group of young friends from mountain and farming backgrounds looking for a social connection, something new and a local business activity.
With its wealth of experience, the association has become a major player in the local area, supplying timber, firewood and a wide range of joinery products for over twenty years.
When storm Alex confronted us with the harsh reality of climate change, it became clear that the Lon Recampum association had in its DNA the foundations to develop and perpetuate a resilient and sustainable business.
It was also clear that the association wanted to strengthen its links with its social ecosystem and welcome new people keen to develop their craft activities. The joiners and sawyers open their doors to new members, new professions and new ideas.
With this vigor and enthusiasm, the Manufacture de La Roya project was born. The building of the former La Brigue railway station now houses the carpentry workshop and the sawmill, two new activities based on local resources and historic know-how: dry stone and wool.
The company's activities are organized into three sectors:
1. The wood sector (firewood, construction wood, joinery and roofing).
2. Wool. (in the engineering phase, transformation of wool into semi-finished and finished products).
3. The stone industry (construction and renovation of dry-stone walls and lauze roofs, dry-stone initiation days, vocational training).
At a time when the wood industry is equipping itself with new machinery to meet growing local demand, and the stone industry is developing its educational dimension, the wool industry in particular represents a challenge. Although wool processing has a long history in Europe, today's shepherds can hardly expect to process wool.
Washing and carding wool is, paradoxically, an activity as old as it is innovative, for want of a current example.
