The square was named after Désiré Féraud, a native of Gattières. A lieutenant-colonel in the Engineers, he was also a general councillor for the Alpes-Maritimes, an officer of the Legion of Honour in 1850, and mayor of the commune in 1877.
At the centre of the square is a fountain dating back to 1823 (when the first water came to the village) and two drinking troughs. When the water was put in, a week-long festival was organised to celebrate this progress : "running water" had arrived in the village ! Water in every house would arrive much later.
