Tree of the Fabaceae family which can reach 10 meters high, the Ceratonia siliqua, native to the Mediterranean regions, is cultivated for its fruit: the carob.
The carob seeds are brown, flattened ovoid, biconvex and very hard. A tree in full production can provide between 300 and 800 kg of carobs per year. The size and the weight of these seeds being rather regular, they were used as unit of measurement in the antiquity.
Their name is the origin of the carat which represented the weight of a carob seed in the gem trade.
