The former fishing village became a popular vacation destination at the beginning of the last century with the arrival of wealthy foreign families. Large estates were built there at that time, such as the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. Many artists also stayed there, including Jean Cocteau, who left his mark on the Villa Santo Sospir.
