The Grimaldi caves are located on the Mediterranean shore close to the French-Italian border, on the Italian side near the town of Ventimiglia. They were home to Homo erectus, Neanderthal man and Homo Sapiens of the upper Palaeolithic Age. The discovery of burial sites from the upper Palaeolithic Age have contributed greatly to the site's reputation. Emile Rivière, a french Prehistorian, uncovered the first grave in the Cavillon cave in 1872. A carving featuring a horse, of the same period as the grave, can be seen on one of the walls of the cave.
