Saint-Tropez quickly became a fortified town with four towers to defend itself from attacks: Tour du Portalet, Tour Vieille, Tour Jarlier and Tour Suffren.
The Tour Veille (15th century), is located in the historic district of La Ponche; together with the Tour du Portalet, which stands opposite, just 80 metres away, it guards access to the sea.
