7 Films that have made of the Côte d'Azur, a land of film shoots

Although since 1970 the Cannes Film Festival has made the Côte d’Azur famous, over time filmmakers have chosen to make it the land of film shoots. Here are 7 of these mythical films that pay homage to the 7th art on the Côte d’Azur!

1. AND GOD CREATED… WOMAN
2. BAY OF ANGELS

(ROGER VADIM, 1956) / (JACQUES DEMY, 1963)

1. Brigitte Bardot, the muse of all male desires, is unquestionably an emblematic figure for the Cöte d’Azur. So much so that her appearance in this scandalous film, forever engraved her image in Saint-Tropez. And what’s more she married the director!

2. As its name suggests, the film sees Jeanne Moreau starring in the legendary Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels) in Nice. It was also filmed in Monaco, Cannes and other places in Nice.

3. LE GENDARME DE SAINT-TROPEZ
4. DAY FOR NIGHT

(JEAN GIRAULT, 1964) / (FRANÇOIS TRUFFAUT, 1973)

3. Louis de Funès and Michel Galabru, at the head of the Gendarmerie in Saint-Tropez, delivered one of the greatest French comedies ever. This film, with a scathing sense of humour, has not aged one bit, as evidenced by the crowds still rushing today to photograph this famous gendarmerie on the Côte d’Azur!

4. Truffaut’s scenario – a mise en abyme set in the world of the cinema – is entirely shot in the Studios de la Victorine in Nice, opened in 1919 and recognized everywhere in Europe. It was also the first big film by Nathalie Baye.

5. THE BIG BLUE
6. LA CITÉ DE LA PEUR

(LUC BESSON 1988) / (ALAIN BERBERIAN, 1993)

5. A classic Luc Besson film in which some of the action takes place in Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. Jean Reno embodies one of his greatest roles, without using any stuntman for the diving scenes, like the rest of the cast. Besson’s teenage dream come true.

6. « La Cité de la Peur » is a cult film because it offers the most scathing satire ever seen at the Cannes Film Festival. Alain Chabat and his ‘Nuls’ offer a huge parody, starting with « La Carioca », which in the American film “Flying Down to Rio” was danced by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers

7. BRICE DE NICE

(JAMES HUTH, 2005)

It took intense physical preparation for Jean Dujardin to swim in the turquoise waters of La Réserve, next to the harbour in Nice, and look like the stereotype of the « winner surfer ». Brice, an endearing anti-hero, marked the Côte d’Azur with his bright yellow t-shirt.
