All the places to see and visit in Monaco

Welcome to one of the smallest countries in the world: Monaco. Just a few kilometres from Nice, the Principality of Monaco is one of the must-sees on your Côte d’Azur holiday. Known the world over for its glamour, its luxury hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants, its Princely Palace and even its famous Grand Prix: Monaco the grandiose will not fail to amaze you. Here are our Top 10 things to see and do in Monaco.

Take a stroll on the Rock!

The birthplace of the Principality of Monaco: a must-see!

Set off to explore the Rocher, taking in the colourful narrow streets and vaulted passageways of the old town, such as rue Basse, rue du Milieu and rue Briques, whose construction dates back to the Middle Ages. At the end of the narrow streets and after visiting Monaco Cathedral, the Place du Palais Princier awaits you. Don’t miss the Changing of the Guard every day at precisely 11.55am. You can also visit the Grand Apartments of the Palace. Before setting off again, hanging from the Rock, take a break in the gardens of Saint-Martin and Sainte-Barbe.

Dive into the heart of the Oceanographic Museum

Aquariums and exhibitions, open the doors to the marine world!

A veritable shrine to Monaco’s maritime history, the Oceanographic Museum contains everything you need to know about the involvement of the Grimaldi Princes in the exploration and protection of the oceans. Built into the side of a rock, the Museum has been looking out over the Mediterranean from its 85-metre height for more than a century. It’s a marvel, with protected aquatic species at its heart. The highlight of the visit is the shark lagoon, where you can get up close and personal with the marine fauna! Finish off this fascinating journey to the heart of the marine world by heading for the terrace at the top of the museum.

Breathe in the Jardin Exotique

The Jardin Exotique is one of the must-see places to visit in Monaco.

With a breathtaking view over the whole of Monaco, the Exotic Garden offers an extraordinary diversity of plant life: species from all over the world are acclimatised here, from the most extravagant American cacti to the giant flowers of South Africa. During your visit, you’ll discover thousands of exotic plants, some of them of astonishing shapes and sizes. Then head for the Grotte de l’Observatoire, where stalactites and stalagmites create a fantastic setting that you can enjoy as you climb some 300 steps.

The Jardin Exotique is closed for renovation work to make the site safer. It will reopen in late summer 2025. Just a few steps away, the Botanical Centre is open for guided or self-guided tours.

Try your luck at the casino

Place your bets: head for the Place du Casino de Monte-Carlo!

The legendary Place du Casino in Monte-Carlo needs no introduction: it’s the one you see on every postcard illustrating the Principality. Surrounded by luxury boutiques, the Hôtel de Paris and magnificent gardens, the Casino de Monte-Carlo is an iconic landmark. Built in 1878 by Charles Garnier, the Casino is without a doubt one of the Top 10 things to see and do in Monaco. Its gaming rooms – roulette, blackjack, poker… – are sumptuous! Go and play there once in your life, if not for the winnings, then for the memory of having set foot on its soil!

Soothe yourself in the Japanese Gardens

A magnificent green setting combining Japanese traditions and Mediterranean elements

Yet another curiosity often overlooked by visitors to the Principality of Monaco, yet not so hidden. Just 10 metres from the water’s edge, the Japanese Garden of Princess Grace of Monaco is a compendium of all the wonders of the land of the rising sun. Here, the harmony of Zen thought reigns, from stones to bamboo, koi carp and other exotic plants, in complete contrast to the surrounding glass buildings. A must-see: a change of scenery guaranteed!

Live to the rhythm of the Grand Prix

Monaco’s must-see spring event!

Every year in May, the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix awakens the Principality to an unprecedented roar. The biggest teams, the greatest drivers and all the world’s fortunes come together for this historic race, which takes place right in the heart of the city. From the grandstand or the VIP terrace, the Grand Prix is a must-see in Monaco. Also worth seeing is the historic Grand Prix, with its gleaming vintage cars!

Stroll around the Port de Fontvieille

A district of Monaco built entirely on the sea!

Less well-known than Port Hercule, the main harbour inlet in the centre of the city, the Port de Fontvieille, in the district of the same name, is much quieter. While it is also home to some prestigious yachts, it is less flashy than the main Port. With a bird’s eye view of the rock, treat yourself to a meal in one of the trendy restaurants on the port! A few steps away is the Princess Grace Rose Garden. 4,000 rosebushes are arranged in the shape of a heart, making for a most fragrant stroll.

Sunbathe on Larvotto beach

Take a sunny break in Monaco!

Along Avenue Princesse Grace, a 500-metre strip of fine sand softens the landscape, bordered by crystal-clear water. The Larvotto beaches in Monaco, all along a pretty promenade shaded by umbrella pines with children’s play areas, are as pleasant as it gets: never crowded, a jellyfish net installed in summer, little beach restaurants with their feet in the sand and very good… And the peace and quiet needed for a real moment of relaxation.

Admire the Prince’s collection of cars

A must-see museum in Monaco: for all car lovers!

This is not a museum, but a real collection, as if you were lucky enough to enter the garage of His Serene Highness Prince Rainier III. Many vehicles are on display, from all eras and in all styles, each with its own little history with the Princely family. You can even see a Formula 1 car! Another of the Prince’s major collections is on display at the Museum of Stamps and Coins, just a few metres away.

Attend an opera in Monte-Carlo

An Italian-style theatre adorned in red and gold, the Monaco Opera House is not to be missed!

Housed in the same extraordinary Belle Époque building as the Casino de Monte Carlo, dating from 1879, ballets, concerts and operas light up the splendid Monaco Opera House. Also known as the Opéra Garnier, after its architect, and a true replica of the Paris Opéra, the auditorium plays host to the world’s most prestigious troupes and orchestras. Every season, the finest opera productions are staged here.
