Cannes, city of cinema

Anchor of the International Film Festival for over 70 years, Cannes proclaims its love of cinema loud and clear through its walls and its history, and is now opening up to other formats of audiovisual creativity, such as CANNESERIES since 2018. A natural setting for film shoots, Cannes never ceases to inspire lovers of the 7th art…

THE HALLMARKS OF CINEMA IN CANNES: PAINTED WALLS

Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe can be seen on the walls of Cannes.

The Cannes painted walls tour is a dazzling tribute to the world of cinema, with monumental frescoes featuring film titles, actors and personalities. In the town centre, Suquet and near the Port, these painted walls feature the great figures of French and world cinema: Alain Delon, Jean-Paul Belmondo, John Wayne, Bourvil, Vivien Leigh, Harold Lloyd, James Dean and Alfred Hitchcock. A “Cannes, City of Cinema” tour that you can discover thanks to the Cannes Greeters.

TRAVERSO, FILM MEMORIES ON GLOSSY PAPER

First there was Auguste, who captured the arrival at Cannes station of Louis Lumière, the honorary president of the first festival. Then came Henri, his grandson, and now Gilles. A family with a collection of over 1.7 million photographs dedicated to the Cannes Festival, the cinema and its personalities. It’s a family heritage that has established itself as the true memory of Cannes, its festival, its ceremonies and its legendary parties. The Traverso collection has been exhibited all over the world, including New York, Beverly Hills, Sarajevo, Turin, Paris, London, Tokyo, Yokohama and Shizuoka.

FILM SHOOTS

Cannes, the capital of cinema and a location for film shoots!

Cannes has been immortalised countless times in films, television programmes, documentaries and adverts, and is a magnet for film-makers! From Brian de Palma, for Femme Fatale, to Louis Leterrier, for The Transporter, and Jacques Audiard, for De Rouille et d’Os, to name but a few, they have all chosen to include Cannes, a city emblematic of cinema, in their feature films. The city’s authentic setting, sunshine, natural scenery and international renown are all assets that meet the demands of these productions. Over the last 3 years, almost 600 film shoots have taken place in the city of cinema.

FROM CINEMA TO SERIES: CANNESERIES

Cannes celebrates cinema and film-making!

Following in the footsteps of the CANNESERIES festival, the emblematic city on the Côte d’Azur is now extending its influence to the world of series by launching an innovative writing residency dedicated to television series.

The initiative is aimed at promising young French and international writers. Eight talents will be selected to take part in this intensive programme from spring 2019, benefiting from personalised support and high-level training at the heart of the CANNESERIES festival. Participants will develop their projects in the stimulating environment of Cannes, in direct contact with the industry’s most influential professionals.

With this approach, Cannes is demonstrating its ability to adapt to the changing face of contemporary audiovisual creation, while maintaining its high standards of excellence and international profile.
