Hiking in and around Cannes

While in the Cité des festivals, the walkways take place between beaches, palaces and palm trees, in Cannes, walking is not to be outdone. Starting out from this idyllic setting that’s so popular with everyone, a number of routes will take you to unsuspected places. From little corners of nature above the palaces to breathtaking views over the azure waters of the Mediterranean, walking in Cannes is well worth the diversions. There’s only one step from the gold of the Croisette to the green of the hinterland: swap your evening shoes for hiking boots and set off to explore the most beautiful paths in Cannes.

Hiking in Cannes: a pedestrian paradise from steps to trails

From Cannes’ dazzling beaches, a few touches of nature are reflected on the Croisette.

Among these natural shades are the distant peaks of the Alps but also the city’s verdant hills. To go from luxury to lushness, follow the signposted paths to the Parc de la Croix des Gardes or the Canal de Siagne.

Between mimosas, pinewoods and a 19th-century canal, Cannes shows itself in a new light. Here, Provence reclaims its rights and reveals its finest assets. Under the trees in the park or by the water, enjoy superb panoramas, perfect for immortalising the landscapes of the Côte d’Azur.

Discover hiking in Cannes on semi-urban paths

Where centuries of cultivation have developed, trees, garrigue and the Alps as a backdrop continue to make nature persist. And if a path leads towards the stars, green landscapes appear.

Hikes in Cannes start in the town and end in the heart of unsuspected natural settings. Follow the old funicular railway and retrace the rich local history, on a unmissable hike in Cannes.

Under the forgotten cables, a gentle circuit takes you from red carpets to green ones. Step back in time to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the seaside resorts of the early 20th century.

Gradually, the glitz of the Croisette gives way to Provençal villas with old-fashioned charm. Moving from elegance to simplicity, from a flavour of yesteryear to modernity, that’s the beauty of a hike in Cannes.

Our top 3 walks in and around Cannes

As well as the famous walks, hiking in Cannes allows you to explore the city’s most beautiful scenery. Here are our favourite walks to discover the natural beauty of Cannes:

1. L’étang de FontMerle
Near Cannes, a hike takes you away from the Côte d’Azur for the time of an adventure. Less than 6 kilometres long and lasting 1 hour 50 minutes, the trail leads through the Valmasque Park to the Fontmerle lake. For a family outing, or an introduction to walking, take the whole family along these trails. At the end of the effort, like a painting with an air of elsewhere, lotuses and water lilies in bloom come to reward you.

  • Duration of the walk: 1h50
  • Height: +107m ; -110m
  • Level: Easy

2. Tour the island of Saint Honorat
Facing the beaches of Cannes, the two island territories of Lérins rise up. To reach the island of Saint-Honorat, board one of the town’s water shuttles. Once you’ve set foot on the island, a superb hike awaits you. Follow the path that wanders between pinewoods and the seaside. After a few minutes’ walk in the heart of the countryside, you’ll come across some imposing stones: the fortified walls of Lérins Abbey. Climb the ramparts to reach a panoramic view of the Mediterranean, the centre of Cannes and the peaks of the Mercantour and the Alps.

  • Hike duration: 1h00
  • Height: +3m; -3m
  • Level: Easy

3. Tour of the island of Sainte Marguerite
For another hike in Cannes between land and sea, head for the second island in the Lérins archipelago: the island of Sainte Marguerite. Here too, the crossing is made aboard a maritime shuttle. After a short sail, you’ll finally see the crystal-clear waters of the beaches, the green pines and the island’s fort. Stroll between beaches and forests. The walk ends in the Sainte-Marguerite museum, where you can see the cells of the old prison and archaeological artefacts.
