Our favourite walks in Hyères to try out today

Nicknamed Hyères les Palmiers, this Var town is a corner of paradise on the Mediterranean. This haven of peace hides a thousand and one facets: smell the flowers in Parc Olbius-Riquier, cycle around the island of Porquerolles and get lost in Port-Cros. Today, put on your best trainers and explore the verdant walks around the town of Hyères.

Hyères, the oldest seaside resort on the Côte d’Azur

White sand, wild coves and a double tombolo are just some of the features that make Hyères an attractive seaside resort.

It was in the 19th century that it was taken over by the European aristocracy, who noticed its mild climate during the winter. From there, the town built new districts as well as luxurious hotels and wealthy Villas.

Since then, this plural natural space has never ceased to increase its appeal by intelligently exploiting its environment: 40 diving sites, gardens, walking and cycling trails, the paradise island of Porquerolles, the beach at l’Almanarre…

Our 2 hiking trail ideas for all the family

As a family, as a couple or with friends, discover the town of Hyères in a different way by exploring these different hikes. The two trails we suggest are suitable for beginners, and can be done with children. So get your best trainers on, and set off to discover the town of a thousand palm trees.

1. Hiking in Giens: A unique peninsula

At the southernmost point of Provence, level with Cap Corse lies the Giens peninsula. Many hiking loops are possible here. Our favourite remains the one to the west, starting from the port of La Madrague towards the Darboussières beach. On paper, it’s a 3-hour hike, which turns into a 6-hour one because (thanks!) of the many coves and beaches along the way.

2. Get your fill of culture with the Château d’Hyères tour departing from La Crau

Dominating the town of Hyère, the summit of the Casteou hill is home to the remains of a medieval castle dating back to the 11th century: a lovely idea for a walk to try out with the family. Before reaching the town’s castle, look out for the mimosa forest on your right. This walk offers some wonderful panoramic views, sure to delight young and old alike.

Are you tempted to cycle to the Col de Babaou?

Offer yourself a cycling getaway during your holiday or weekend in Hyères.

Starting from the Argentière beach, ride through the vineyards and up to the panoramic terrace of Bormes-les-Mimosas.

When you arrive at the Col de Babaou, enjoy the shades of blue of the Mediterranean and the open sky.

Then make a diversion to the Fort de Brégançon for a swim on the beach at Cabasson.

A perfect bike tour in the heart of Provence for all the family.

Bike tours of the islands of Porquerolles, Port-Cros, Le Levant

1. Cycling around Porquerolles
The island of Porquerolles is just a short boat ride from the Giens peninsula. The main beach, covered in pine trees, is the starting point for a lovely bike ride. Allow a full day to see all the wonders of the largest island in the archipelago. Pedal on to the Moulin du Bonheur and enjoy a leisurely lunch overlooking the vineyards of Porquerolles. During your walk, sun cream and a hat are a must before taking the plunge into the cool waters of Langoustier beach.

2. A trail through the island wildlife of Port-Cros
Watch for tracks, cries, furtive flights around you to enjoy this loop hike in Port-Cros. This steep circuit witnesses magnificent views of the island’s south coast and stroll near the islet of La Gabinière. If time permits, take time to relax after your hike on the southern beach.

3. In the simplest of garb on the Ile du Levant
If you’re visiting the Ile du Levant, be aware that some areas are naturist and others at everyone’s whim. Visiting Le Levant means embracing a way of life in harmony with nature and respect for one another. Take the “Nature Trail” to discover the island’s protected nature reserve. A walk tinged with freedom overlooking the town of Hyères and its islands.

The Giens peninsula, the Hyères islands, the Grande Rade, the Toulon mountains, Cap Sicié and the Bec de l’Aigle … These are the panoramas offered by a horse ride in the Colle Noire massif. 2. Horse riding in the Sauvebonne valley
Who hasn’t dreamt of crossing a river on horseback? Now is the time to do it! Thanks to the many waterways in the Sauvebonne valley, horse riding is highly recommended. A trail in the heart of Provence that will have you galloping through vineyards and rivers just a few kilometres from Hyères.
