THE FORMER CAPITAL OF PERFUME FLOWERS

With its rich horticultural past, La Colle-sur-Loup was, until the middle of the 20th century, the main producer of perfume flowers for the famous Grasse perfumeries. Its history has made it the capital of the May rose, the Centifolia rose, the main ingredient in Chanel N°5. The Espace Rose de Mai, in the rue Clemenceau, now the town’s multi-purpose hall, is the former Cooperative of Perfume Flower Producers. Opened between 1907 and 1995, it originally brought together owners from La Colle, Saint-Paul and Villeneuve-Loubet and was set up to collect and distil flowers. At La Colle, not only the famous centifolia rose was grown, but also tea roses, orange blossom, two different types of violet and peppermint. Since 2007, La Colle-sur-Loup has celebrated the rose every year in the middle of May. The
dates back to the 1950s, and was intended to attract the press and the stars from the Croisette during the Cannes Film Festival!
