The most beautiful headlands on the Côte d'Azur

The Côte d’Azur says sea. And sea says seaside. And seaside says headland. Here are some the most beautiful headlands on the Côte d’Azur where you can escape and above all feast your eyes!

WALK ON CAP FERRAT

Cap Ferrat is of course in our selection of the most beautiful headlands on the Côte d’Azur.

“Lose your head to love” sang Jean Ferrat, a classic tune to hum as you walk Cap Ferrat, the peninsula that separates Beaulieu-sur-Mer from Villefranche. Often called the billionaires’ peninsula because of the imposing properties there. It is possible to walk right around the Cap Ferrat headland on the coastal footpath from Villefranche harbour to the village of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Limestone coves, rural path, breathtaking views, Cap Ferrat is a delight for photographers. At its southern end is a lighthouse dating from the Sardinian regime of 1827, destroyed in 1944 but rebuilt in 1951.

WALK AROUND CAP D’AIL

Further west is Cap d’Ail which, as its name suggests, is located in the commune of Cap d’Ail.

Site that was born in the late 19th century when Hôtel Eden was built by Baron de Pauville and where all the stars of the time came to enjoy the seaside – for example the Lumières brothers, Greta Garbo, Jean Cocteau. As in Cap-Ferrat, a path skirts the headland from Mala beach to Marquet beach. You’ll discover the local flora, exotic gardens as well as villas that have retained the 19th century style, such as Villa Perle Blanche owned by the Lumières brothers or Villa Les Funambules and Parc Sacha Guitry.

WALK AROUND CAP MARTIN

Cap d’Antibes, Cap Ferrat and Cap Martin form a trilogy of the great natural sites on the Côte d’Azur !

Cap Martin is home to some of the most beautiful villas on the Côte d’Azur. At the end of the 19th century, the site became the property of some wealthy Englishmen who commissioned the architect Hans-Georg Tersling to develop it. He laid out roads along with a prestigious hotel, the Grand Hôtel du Cap Martin where European royalty – including Emperor François-Joseph and his wife Sissi – stayed. Cap Martin became a little Versailles where luxury villas flourished: Villa Cyrnos, Villa Cypris, Villa Del Mare and Villa Zamir… Take the former customs path, for a 5 km walk with beautiful views of Menton and Monaco. WALK AROUND CAP D’ANTIBES

Discover one of the most beautiful headlands on the Côte d’Azur: the majestic Cap d’Antibes!

Let’s go further west towards Cap d’Antibes, whose majesty you fly over before landing at Nice airport. Obviously in Antibes, this peninsula is near the Argent Faux cove and Villa Eilenroc. A majestic site, known since antiquity, it is now very popular with people from all over the world – and especially with movie people during the Cannes Film Festival. A coastal path, called the « Tire-Poil » takes a 3 kilometre route around the headland, starting from Garoupe beach. There is an exceptional, unique panorama over the Iles de Lérins and the Mercantour peaks. Not to mention the many majestic mansions in the area such as Château de la Croë.

WALK AROUND CAP-ROUX

A sensational 360 degree panorama of the Côte d’Azur awaits you from Cap Roux!

We now go into the Var region with Cap Roux, in the Estérel. An ochre massif as its name suggests, Cap Roux is like a balcony over the sea as well as a popular hiking site. At its summit (454 meters), an orientation table allows you to contemplate both the volcanic Estérel landscape and the sea. At the foot of Cap Roux, is the cave that the monk Saint Honorat retreated to before he finally left for the solitude of Lérina, a small island on which he founded the Lérins abbey in the fifth century.

WALK AROUND CAP TAILLAT

A coastal path that overlooks beautiful wild coves!

Continuing east, we come to Cap Taillat, sometimes called Cae Cartaya. In the south of the Saint-Tropez peninsula, it marks the border between Ramatuelle and Croix-Valmer. It has areal concentration of headlands protected by the coastal conservatory organization: the Cap Camarat with its semaphore overlooking the Baie de Pampelonne, Cap Lardier which overlooks Gigaro beach and Cavalaire Bay and therefore, the very wild and preserved Cap Taillat. Three natural sites, very popular with walkers, full of protected flora and fauna. Real eye candy!
