THE BEGINNINGS OF IRONMAN…
Did you know? In 1978 in Hawaii, a debate began about whether runners, cyclists or swimmers were the strongest athletes. To decide, Navy Commander John Collins and his wife Judy proposed a challenge: whoever wins a race combining the three disciplines one after the other will be called « Iron Man ». Fifteen men competed in the 1st edition on 18 February 1978. Twelve finished the race which was won by Gordon Haller, crowned 1st IRONMAN with a time of 11 hours 46 minutes and 58 seconds.
