Did you know? In 1978 in Hawaii, a debate began about whether runners, cyclists or swimmers were the strongest athletes. To decide, Navy Commander John Collins and his wife Judy proposed a challenge: whoever wins a race combining the three disciplines one after the other will be called « Iron Man ». Fifteen men competed in the 1st edition on 18 February 1978. Twelve finished the race which was won by Gordon Haller, crowned 1st IRONMAN with a time of 11 hours 46 minutes and 58 seconds.

A 3.8 kilometre swim in the Mediterranean

The start of the swimming section of Ironman is on Centennial beach at 6:25 for the pros, then at 6:30 for the age groups. This section has 2 loops of the same distance (1.9 km) interspersed with an Australian exit of about 20 m. Time limit: 2 hours 15 min after the start (i.e. 8:45 am) to complete it. The transition area is accessible via the Centennial beach stairs. The park exit is located on the east side, close to the Opéra beach.

A 180 kilometre bike ride through the hills and passes in the Nice countryside

The Ironman cycling route is a single loop that starts on the Promenade des Anglais. Starting and finishing in Nice, this route enchants athletes for 180 kilometres. They go through 17 towns and villages, taking advantage of the beauty of the Nice countryside and the fervour of the spectators. The altitude difference is 1,800 meters and there is a maximum time of 10 hours and 45 minutes from the beginning of the race, i.e. 5:15 pm.

A 42.195 kilometre race on the mythical Promenade des Anglais

Three refuelling points give an energy recharge every 1.7 kilometres. All the participants can thus count on the presence of 80,000 spectators that come to encourage them throughout the competition!
