Consecrated by Pope Gregory XIII on September 7, 1579, the Confrérie de la Miséricorde is placed under the dual patronage of the Virgin Mary and the Beheading of St. John the Baptist.
These lay Catholic brotherhoods came into being during the 16th century, in the wake of the spiritual renewal sparked by the Protestant Reformation. The Confrérie des Pénitents Noirs (Black Penitents) stood out for its commitment to the macabre: in particular, its mission was to accompany the dying and bury the destitute. The register of their actions, and the list of indulgences associated with them, can still be seen in the sacristy of the Chapelle de la Miséricorde.
By virtue of their statutes, the penitent brotherhoods own the chapels they occupy and ensure their preservation. They also organize visits and guided tours during the summer months, as well as on the occasion of the European Heritage Days. They also organize the traditional Good Friday procession.
