Aretha Louise Franklin, the great American singer, songwriter and pianist, is nicknamed the "Queen of Soul". From an early age, she sang in the gospel choir at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, where her father was a pastor. At the age of 18, she signed a recording contract with Columbia Records.
