Always in action, tools in hand, Nicolas Lehmann hurries along the road to his next creations. Like the Walking Man, his emblem, the sculptor travels between his studio in Cape Town, South Africa, and La Colle sur Loup, not far from his home in Saint-Paul de Vence.
In his travel bag is an imagination that nothing seems able to hinder. He began his apprenticeship at the age of 13, in the tradition of blacksmithing, and continued his quest until he mastered the mechanical engineering of suspension bridges. Self-taught, he developed a passion for bronze, setting up his own foundry.
His authentic know-how and technical skills have enabled him to create everything from monumental works to functional bronze and metalwork for furniture.
Here, a three-metre-high suspended caravel, and there his mini Walking Men preparing to leave the workshop on surrealist wheels and trolleys.
Nicolas Lehmann never ceases to surprise and amaze us in this fantastic universe. Deeply connected to nature, without which he cannot create, he transposes his thoughts and emotions directly onto metal, wood and glass, creating a truly raw, abstract art, full of humanity.
