Camille Flammarion, the renowned astronomer whose centenary of death is being celebrated in 2025, is widely known for his passion for the stellar eyelash and his great talents as a popularizer, as evidenced by his work, Popular Astronomy (1880).
But, perhaps less well known, he was also passionate about spiritualism, which he discovered at the age of 19, when this "practice" had only recently appeared in Europe, originally a purely American product. The term dates back to 1858 and is a purely French creation, seeking to distinguish itself from modern (or Anglo-Saxon) spiritualism from which it originated.
An enthusiastic medium at first, even communicating with his idol Galileo, Flammarion gradually distanced himself from the mystical aspect of the spiritualist phenomenon, without ever losing his interest in this "discipline," which he considered a science of observation, just like his beloved astronomy.
His numerous publications on the subject, up until his very last years, attest to his loyalty to this passion. He met many famous mediums of his time, often even inviting them to séances at his home. Discover another side of this engaging astronomer.
