Modest yet deeply rooted in local history, Saint Peter’s Chapel reflects a rich and distinctive past.
Built in the Middle Ages on the remains of a Roman site, it reveals an earlier occupation long before its construction. During its later conversion into a private dwelling, remains of tombs were uncovered, confirming the site’s importance across the centuries.
The chapel also served as a place of pilgrimage: archives from 1786 record that sailors from the coast came here to honour Saint Peter and offer their devotions.
Finally, oral tradition tells that the inhabitants of Mons once lit large fires to guide fishermen at sea in bad weather, giving the site both a spiritual and protective role.
