A classic silent film by Alfred Hitchcock comes to life as Quentin Guérillot improvises on the piano, creating a live soundtrack. An encounter between cinematic heritage and musical creation.
The Lodger (1927) is Alfred Hitchcock's first major film, and already reveals the themes and style of the master of suspense. Inspired by the Jack the Ripper case, this silent thriller follows the arrival of a mysterious tenant, soon suspected of being a serial killer. As the murders multiply, fear takes hold of the house and doubt gnaws at the inhabitants. Shadow play, daring framing, mounting tension: this silent masterpiece reveals a filmmaker in the throes of invention, and the live music further intensifies the film's unsettling atmosphere.
Quentin Guérillot, holder of five first prizes in organ, harmony, counterpoint, fugue and form, and 20th- and 21st-century composition from the CNSM de Paris, was appointed titular organist of the Cavaillé-Coll organs at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint-Denis at the age of 25, where he succeeded his mentor Pierre Pincemaille. A curious and eclectic musician, he gives numerous organ and harpsichord concerts in France and abroad, promoting a vast repertoire ranging from the 15th century to the present day.
