There are artists who write songs. And then there is Cœur de pirate, whose words and melodies linger long after the concert, like an echo of our own emotions.
Behind the name Cœur de Pirate lies Béatrice Martin, a Montrealer who trained in classical piano for over ten years but was overtaken by a desire for freedom during her teenage years — having dabbled in punk before developing a piano-driven pop sound that is both delicate and intense.
In 2008, a few tracks posted online were enough to launch the phenomenon. Her debut album went platinum in Canada and gold in France, and ‘Comme des enfants’ — written in about fifteen minutes — became a true generational anthem for French-language pop.
The momentum never let up: albums, international tours, sold-out venues and awards followed in quick succession. With each project, her songwriting grew in intimacy and depth. Her talent even extended beyond the realm of song, with the soundtrack for the video game Child of Light, a dreamlike and poetic world she imbued with a rare sensitivity.
More than fifteen years into her career and 1.5 million albums sold later, she has established herself as a major voice in French-language pop — not through sales figures, but through her disarming sincerity. She sings of love, break-ups, doubts and the light that follows the storms, without pretence or pretence.
On stage, a piano, a voice, and time stands still. Every concert becomes a deeply human moment, where we recognise a little of our own stories in hers.
