Perched at over 2,200 meters above sea level, between the Tuébi and Tinée valleys, the fortifications at Col de Crous in Péone are part of the Maginot Line of the Alps.
Built between 1932 and 1939, this unfinished military structure was intended to protect a strategic passage between France and Italy. It housed a small garrison responsible for guarding the mule track between Roya and Péone. Even today, the remains of these concrete blocks bear witness to the ingenuity and effort required to defend borders in a high mountain environment.
From the hamlet of La Baumette, the trail to the Col de Crous offers a spectacular immersion in the unspoilt landscapes of the Niçois highlands. Between larch forests, flower-filled mountain pastures and breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, the climb is a veritable sensory voyage. Accessible to good walkers, this hike combines natural beauty and heritage discovery.
