Conference on ‘Volcanism in Ethiopia’ by Thierry de Gouvenain (Trainer at the Departmental Hiking Committee 06)
Ethiopia's landscapes are strongly marked by volcanism, and the north of the country boasts some famous sites such as the permanent lava lake of Erta Ale, the Dallol hydrothermal site and the Simien Traps.
These volcanoes are relatively unknown and little studied, no doubt due to their location in areas that are difficult to access. There are 67 volcanoes in Ethiopia, more than in any other country in Africa, although many of them are quite small. The existence of these small volcanoes, hot springs, calderas and numerous deep gorges indicates that much of Ethiopia's territory is still geologically unstable. Most Ethiopian volcanoes are located on the fault line separating the Somali Plate and the African Plate, mainly in the Great Rift Valley.
