The Grimaldi Castle Museum now pays tribute to this artist, who exhibited his work there during his lifetime. The exhibition brings together works from private collections, two French museums and, exceptionally, the National Art Museum of Ukraine.
This exhibition offers an opportunity to rediscover a painter whose journey, from the steppes to the Mediterranean, is deeply rooted in the artistic history of Cagnes-sur-Mer.

Born in 1883 in Krolevets, Ukraine, Alexis Gritchenko moved to Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1927 with his wife Lilas de Maubeuge, daughter of the owners of the Le Cagnard hotel. They lived there until 1960.

A keen traveller, the artist made the Mediterranean village his permanent home. The man who described himself as ‘coming from the steppes’ referred to the Mediterranean as ‘my true homeland’. For more than thirty years, Cagnes-sur-Mer was a constant source of inspiration for him. Doors, gardens, views and landscapes are the subjects of a series of works that reveal an intimate relationship with light and space.
