The Grimaldi Castle Museum now pays tribute to this artist, who exhibited his work there during his lifetime. The exhibition brings together works from private collections, two French museums and, exceptionally, the National Art Museum of Ukraine.
This presentation is an opportunity to rediscover a painter whose itinerary, from the steppes to the Mediterranean, is an integral part of the artistic history of Cagnes-sur-Mer.
Born in 1883 in Krolevets, Ukraine, Alexis Gritchenko settled in Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1927 with his wife Lilas de Maubeuge, daughter of the owners of the Hôtel Le Cagnard. They lived there until 1960.
An avid traveler, the artist made the Mediterranean village a lasting home. The man who described himself as "coming from the steppes" referred to the Mediterranean as "my true homeland". For over thirty years, Cagnes-sur-Mer was a constant source of inspiration. Doors, gardens, views and landscapes form the motifs of a body of work that asserts an intimate relationship with light and space.
