Portraits of Jean Cocteau's friends stand alongside the Prince of Poets' famous self-portraits. Jean Cocteau was portrayed by his artist friends.
Beautiful, elegant portraits show him in his early twenties. A frequent visitor to artistic Montmartre, Cocteau met some of the greatest painters of his time, including Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso, who portrayed him.
The Séverin Wunderman collection also includes a series of fine photographs by Philippe Halsman and Irving Penn, as well as an Andy Warhol silkscreen commissioned in 1985 by Séverin Wunderman for the opening of the museum in Irvine. The artist admits to having been greatly influenced in his life and work by the poet.
One of Jean Cocteau's major self-portraits in the museum's possession is Self-portrait Without a Face. Portraits of his friends Pablo Picasso, Raymond Radiguet, Christian Bérard and Yul Brynner will also be on display.
The tour will comprise four sequences: Self-portraits, Sacred Monsters, Dancers and Writers, Musicians.
