Doctor J Henry Bennett:
This English doctor played an important role in the development of tourism in the town in winter. In 1859, after twenty-five years of work, he became tubercular and decided to settle in Menton. From the first winter, to his great surprise, his health improved considerably. Two years later, completely cured of his illness.
He studied meteorology with Dr Farina, conducted an analysis of the Mediterranean climate, and wrote two books on the subject: "On the treatment of pulmonary diseases by hygiene, climate and medicine, and its relationship with modern doctrines", and "Winter and spring on the Mediterranean coast". For him, it was the climate of Menton and the splendour of the environment that cured him. He therefore invited the sick to come and recharge their batteries. Today, we know that the humid climate of Menton is not responsible for the cure of his disease and is not recommended for patients who suffer from it.
