A simply fabulous hike: you'll follow ancient mule tracks from the hilltop hamlets of Berghe to the fortified eagle's nest barns of Gauron, returning via the pas de la Tranchée...
The hamlets of Bergue Inférieur and Bergue Supérieur, which were attached to Fontan to form the commune in 1870, sit quietly on their vertiginous slopes above the Roya, and were only served by an acrobatic road in 1945, built with the help of German prisoners.
Starting from Bergue Supérieur, this route takes in the still inhabited and grazed mountains of the Fontan and Tende communes, including the authentic cobbled paths linking Bergue to Granile and the Gauron barns.
There is also a magnificent panoramic view of the upper Roya and the border ridge from the Pas de la Tranchée, with the Bieugne valley in the foreground, giving access to the Mesches reservoir.
ROUTE :
From Bergue Supérieur (820 m), walk through the hamlet; a few metres after the church (b.33), the path rises steadily between the terraces and passes under the cemetery.
Continue uphill until you reach a small ridge.
The path then bends, becomes level and reaches Granile (1,070 m), which you cross until you reach a wide ramp that rises to the left (b.219, 220). The route rises again among the terraces, takes two metal footbridges over the penstock coming from Lac des Mesches, crosses a small bar and becomes level from the summit of Bonsapée (1,343 m - b.221).
Through attractive undergrowth, you soon come to the first Gauron barns (1,350 m - b.222), continue flat and climb a few hairpin bends to the Pas de la Tranchée (1,589 m - b.223).
Cross to the south (b.224) and descend along the Bergue valley.
Below you will find a path that stretches under the Corbeaux rocks before descending a few hairpin bends near the road to Bergue Supérieur (b.225). Follow the road up to the entrance to the hamlet.
