In a fictional matriarchal society where women have taken power after a feminist revolution, men suspected of phallocracy are severely punished and emasculation becomes the ultimate sentence.
Léon de Saint-Pé, writer and member of the Académie Française, is chained by his wife Ada for having impregnated the maid. While awaiting trial, he is forced to engage in daily self-criticism. His lawyer, Lebelluc, who deliberately castrated himself out of ambition, pleads his case during a heated trial in which every member of the de Saint-Pé family and all his staff testify before an uncompromising judge. The relevance of Anouilh's satire, which, although dated, resonates with our current debates on feminism, is evident. "La Culotte" is a farce that uses humor and the absurd to criticize extremism, whether male or female. In it, Anouilh denounces the madness of a system that reduces the individual to nothingness by reversing traditional gender roles.
