Gift from François 1er to the inhabitants of Vence
Legend has it that this ash tree was planted by François 1st. He wanted to thank the locals for welcoming and housing his contingent during the ‘Truce of Nice’ signed between the King of France and Charles V in 1538.
François 1st was at Villeneuve Loubet at the time, but part of his court and regiment were housed in Vence. As a reward, he made a number of improvements to the town, including the planting of this ash tree. This old tree was voted ‘Tree of the Year’ in 2022.
