Dominique GARCIA - Greeks and Gauls, from Provence to Champagne: the latest discoveries
Dominique Garcia is an archaeologist and historian, university professor (European Protohistory and National Antiquities) and honorary member of the Institut Universitaire de France. Since 2014, he has been Chairman of the Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives - Europe's largest archaeological operator.
Dominique Garcia has taken part in archaeological digs in France, Greece, Italy and Syria, and conducts research on ethnogenesis, economy, cultures and societies,
the habitats and territories of the Celts, Gauls, Iberians and Ligurians, and their relations with classical societies: Phoenicians, Etruscans, Greeks and Romans.
He is the author of numerous scientific contributions and recently edited, with Marc Bouiron, L'Atlas archéologique de la France, (Tallandier, 2023), and also published Les Gaulois à l'œil nu (CNRS éditions, 2021 reed. augmented in 2025).
In recent years, archaeological excavations on the Mediterranean coast of Gaul and in the continental Celtic world have yielded spectacular documents illustrating contacts between the Greeks from Phocaea and local populations (Celts, Gauls, Ligurians).
Based on archaeological and historical data, Dominique Garcia will introduce us to these societies, their culture, economy and the religious practices of the various communities in Greek Provence and Mediterranean Celtic.
What were Etruscan and Greek navigators doing in Gaul? What does Celtic art owe to Greek civilization? Mediterranean cities and Gallic towns: two forms of urbanization? What were Gaulish religions like in the Midi? These are just some of the questions raised during the evening.
The evening includes :
- champagne reception on the Villa patio
- themed lecture
- dinner at Restaurant Béatrice concocted by our chef Myriam Barda (*wine and dine pairing and a flute of champagne)
