In Hyères, salt production began on the former Pesquiers fishing pond in 1848 and continued for almost 150 years. As well as preserving the memory of this traditional activity, this protected area also boasts an exceptional ornithological heritage.
Stretching over 900 ha between the 2 sandy strips of the tombolo, a distinctive landscape feature of the Giens peninsula, the Salins d'Hyères site includes the Vieux Salins (to the north) and the Salin des Pesquiers. Blown by the sun and wind, this landscape of water and salt bears witness to the flourishing activity of the salt workers. In 1967, the entire site was taken over by the Compagnie des Salins du Midi.
Owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral since 1995, the Hyères salt flats, with their originality and highly varied degrees of salinity, are now a natural area of exceptional biodiversity. No fewer than 260 bird species have been recorded here! From June to September, twilight outings are organized to observe and listen to this fascinating heritage. An itinerary also guides pedestrians (and cyclists) through the Vieux Salins to discover the fauna, flora and history at their own pace. For all other tours, please contact Espace Nature.
