The puppet tells the story of humanity in what constitutes it. It explores its capacity to tell us "I am here" and to be astonished by it.
In this sensitive experience for a long-string puppet, a character moves within a lunar landscape of black graphite, exposed to the climatic variations of its environment. Its wanderings in search of otherness in the face of the hostility that surrounds it are nourished by a poetics of detail. An intimacy is created that compels us to scrutinize both the figure and its puppeteer, whose breath and slightest movements we observe. Like a story by Samuel Beckett, MILIEU depicts a situation that is as funny as it is metaphysical.
By revisiting the techniques of string puppetry, Renaud Herbin chooses to put them at the service of a contemporary style of writing. Here, he offers a variation on the notion of the puppet booth, playing with scale and the gravity of the suspended body.
