The collections of the Anatole Jakovsky Museum of Naive Art enter into dialogue with those of the MAMAC around the definitions and classifications of art.
A total of 18 international artists, some of them confidential, marginal, little-known, or anonymous, and 26 works (paintings, photographs, sculptures, and collages) question our relationship with art.
A unique dialogue between collections
"Parallel Worlds" brings together works from the collections of the Anatole Jakovsky International Museum of Naive Art and the MAMAC, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Nice.
The exhibition reveals different artistic paths of the 20th century, questioning classifications, abolishing boundaries and labels. What characterizes naive art, art brut, singular art, and contemporary art? Where should we situate popular art? Is it always a theoretical, conceptual, and referenced approach? A story of artistic encounters? Of emotional feeling?
An encounter with the works, however, reveals that the porosity and influence of genres and practices nourish most artistic approaches. Interactions, influences, and borrowings are at the origin of all creation.
These worlds, evolving in parallel, come together and interact through thematic, formal, and aesthetic connections. Beyond definitions, each artist creates their own universe with galaxies, constellations, and networks.
The artists: Karel Appel, Christian Boltanski, Gaston Chaissac, Serge Dorigny, Ivan Generalić, Dorothy Iannone, Lars Fredrikson, Karen, Eva Lallement, Simone Le Carré-Galimard, Greta Pĕcnik, Marilena Pelosi, Zofia Rostad, Niki de Saint Phalle, Dorothée Selz, and Antoni Miralda. Séraphine de Senlis, anonymous.
