To say that ancient Egypt is fascinating is an understatement. Its antiquity, its duration, its wealth thanks to the fertility of its soil and the abundance of its gold, its gigantic monuments, its charismatic rulers, its unique gods, its writing...
...both familiar and mysterious, its "science"—everything contributes to making this culture a revered object... and a source of fantasy, even from Antiquity itself.
Beyond the usual clichés about impossible or sacred architecture, ancient Egypt is burdened with a whole host of practices and knowledge that are most often exaggerations, misunderstandings of real elements of its culture, or simply pure inventions that reek of exoticism.
These received ideas, individually, have only a minor impact, but together they contribute to the creation of a false representation of Egypt, support the most serious claims, and undermine genuine Egyptological work in the eyes of a certain public more eager for wonder than for truth.
