Phaedra, wife of Theseus, king of Athens, is madly in love with her stepson Hippolytus but hides this guilty feeling.
When she learns of her husband's death, Phaedra confesses her feelings to Hippolytus, who violently rejects her. However, Theseus is not dead.
Ashamed, Phaedra, not daring to appear before her husband, accuses Hippolytus of having seduced her. Theseus curses his son Hippolytus and asks Neptune to punish him.
Aricia tries, in vain, to convince Theseus of Hippolytus's innocence. But it is too late. Hippolytus's body is brought back, defeated by Neptune.
Phaedra commits suicide, confessing the truth.
To redeem himself, Theseus decides to adopt the woman his son loved: Aricia.
