Indian painter Sayed Haider Raza is known as a member of the Progressive Artists' Group in India and the École de Paris. He was the first foreigner to receive the Prix de la Critique, in Paris, in 1956. He is considered one of the major painters of the 20th century. Sayed Haider Raza (Barbara 1922 - Delhi 2016) lived in France from 1950 to 2011, between Paris and Gorbio, before moving back to India. In 1959, he married French artist Janine Mongillat (1930-2002), from whom the Raza-Mongillat collection takes its name. He divided his time between Paris and Gorbio, where he and Janine Mongillat were involved for many years in restoring the old château and transforming it into an art center. In India, Raza is definitively considered one of the great masters of modern art. But also in France and the United States.
