The Merveilles refuge is in winter operation: unguarded, hikers must be self-sufficient (water and food), the refuge will be open and guarded this winter on reservation for groups of 8 people minimum:

The janitor provides meals and drinking water.
In winter, the refuge can be used as an objective, base or stage for magnificent snowshoeing or ski touring excursions to Mont Bego, Grand Capelet, or during the Grande Traversée du Mercantour.

The refuge is open during the winter season either as a self-guided refuge or as a guarded refuge by reservation; call the warden before coming to the refuge.
Please note: if the refuge is open, it is guarded, so there is no "unguarded" part!
Winter conditions at the refuge are special:
The dormitories are not heated; a wood-burning stove in the common area heats the dining room only. Blankets are available, but for your thermal comfort we strongly advise you to bring a comforter.

The refuge is open on request for a minimum of 8 people,
When a group books, a date appears in orange on the booking calendar on the refuge's website. If a group books and allows the refuge to open, other people can join them, but they can't book without contacting us in advance.
