As early as the XVᵉ century, the inhabitants of Vence were allowed to lean their houses against the ramparts.
This measure, taken in particular on the rue de la Coste, helped to preserve the ramparts of the Cité, particularly those on the north side. On the outside (boulevard Paul André), you can still see the battlements and some of the archways, which were partially filled in during successive renovations. Also worth seeing at no. 38 is a house with a corbelling, i.e. a projection of the main room onto the street.
