A monumental railway station that once marked the border between France and Italy. Now closed to the public, it is the subject of a restructuring project.
Built in 1928, the Saint-Dalmas de Tende station was designed by Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) as a border station with France.
The railway had arrived in Saint-Dalmas as early as 1915, with a small temporary station. The international vocation of the station to be built prompted its sponsors to make it a showcase for Italian power, giving it neo-classical dimensions and decor worthy of a big-city station.
The station's main building has a vast footprint, 125 m long and 17 m wide. On the north façade, the three overhangs are composed of a two-storey "triumphal arch": a central semicircular arch framed by slightly recessed side openings. Decorations are created by the interplay of cut stone facings.
The building has a floor area of around 5,100 m², plus cellars.
The first floor housed the lobby, as well as a restaurant and kitchen, a baggage room, police and operations offices, a vast waiting room...
The furnishings have disappeared, but the rooms still feature granito and cement tile floors, with a wide variety of decorations. A few other relics (wrought iron, woodwork, etc.) bear witness to the building's former grandeur.
No ticket office, but a TER ticket dispenser.
