In 1905, the town of Menton decided to build its municipal museum. The building, designed by architect Adrien Rey, opened in 1909. However, as early as 1878, the commune already had a museum, housed in the town hall.

The museum was the brainchild of Stanislas Bonfils, a self-taught naturalist and archaeologist.
The first floor is dedicated to the presentation of regional prehistoric collections, highlighting how human populations have dealt with contemporary issues such as climate change and biodiversity.
The museum also features a permanent exhibition on Mediterranean shipwreck treasures, presenting archaeological remains from underwater excavations.
