The Savonnette Ski Lift, Its History

  • Historic site and monument
voie du berger, 06660 Auron, Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée
Today an improvised toboggan run (when the amount of snow allows it), this hill called La Savonnette was once a ski slope.
Built in 1951, it was one of the first ski lifts installed by the company "Le Téléphérique d'Auron," replacing a snow tow. The ski lift served two slopes for beginners and children, and numerous ski lessons were offered. These slopes enjoyed immense success for a long time, offering a family-friendly atmosphere.
Its location in the center of the resort proved to be a wise choice. This new lift was located near the Hôtel Le Collet d'Auron (built in 1937) and the Hôtel du Pilon (built in 1952). The Hôtel du Pilon was an ultra-modern 4-star hotel equipped with a natural ice rink, a discotheque, and later the only heated swimming pool in the valley. It was the resort's finest hotel for decades, where many political figures such as Georges Pompidou, Jacques Chirac, and Valéry Giscard d'Estaing stayed. sports and artistic personalities such as Bourvil, Marie Laforêt, Marcel Amont, Richard Clayderman and many others...
The dark, snowless 1980s undermined the hotel's profitability, leading to its complete shutdown. After 30 years of operation, the ski lift was dismantled in 1982.
